Christmas 2020

2020 has undoubtedly set many new records. We’ve all probably smashed our personal records for the most hours spent at home in a week or the amount of times you’ve washed your hands in one day.

After adding up the amount of seasonal films watched during Christmases past, it might come as no surprise that during the year  that we all needed a little extra cheer, one last record has snuck in: 2020 broke the record for the amount of Christmas films I watched.

A new festive favourite (Klaus) and a classic Christmas cracker (The Bishop’s Wife).

This year was a 35:65 split of rewatches and first time views with 20 films in total. I watched the first film on 7 November, but last year I watched my first film on 5 November so 2019 still holds that record.

This year’s films – highest rating first:

  • The Bishop’s Wife ★★★★½
  • Klaus ★★★★ (rewatch)
  • The Muppets Christmas Carol ★★★★ (rewatch)
  • The Christmas Chronicles ★★★★ (rewatch)
  • While You Were Sleeping ★★★★ (rewatch)
  • Home Alone ★★★★ (rewatch)
  • Elf ★★★★ (rewatch)
  • Die Hard ★★★★ (rewatch)
  • Noelle ★★★★
  • The Holiday ★★★★ (rewatch)
  • The Christmas Chronicles: Part Two ★★★½
  • Operation Christmas Drop ★★★
  • The Princess Switch: Switched Again ★★★
  • The Grinch ★★★
  • Godmothered ★★★
  • Fred Claus ★★★
  • My Christmas Inn ★★½
  • Die Hard 2 ★★½
  • Holidate ★★½
  • The Polar Express ★★

Did you watch many Christmas films this year? If yes, which was your favourite?

  1. That’s quite a passel of holiday cheer! I’ve seen a lot of them but not all. Of this group Die Hard is my favorite though its relation to Christmas is rather ephemeral for most of its running time. Still it’s a great thrill ride with the three leads all perfect in their respective roles.

I LOVE all things Christmas. We decorate to a nearly ridiculous degree, play Christmas music none stop from the day after Thanksgiving until the Epiphany and all the other trimmings so Christmas movie viewing is a given. I stick with the more classic traditional fare though rather than newer stuff, however I’m always happy to find something new and good.

What I’ve watched this season favorites first:

    1. White Christmas (1954)-Probably my favorite Christmas movie, it’s neck and neck with the next one on the list though. A couple of years ago my nieces and I went to see it during a special theatrical run and it was magical on that big silver screen.
    2. Christmas in Connecticut (1945)-A rare Barbara Stanwyck comedy. Unsurprisingly she aces her role as does Sidney Greenstreet likewise taking a break from heavy drama.
    3. A Christmas Carol (1984)-The George C. Scott version from the 80’s. There are other fine takes on the story but this is the one I always turn to.
    4. We’re No Angels (1955)
    5. A Christmas Story (1983)
    6. The Shop Around the Corner (1940)
    7. The Lemon Drop Kid (1951)-The film that introduced “Silver Bells”
    8. Miracle on 34th Street (1947)
    9. Holiday Affair (1949)
    10. The Holly and the Ivy (1952)
    11. The Christmas Setup (2020)

    1. ‘Passel’ – I didn’t know that word until I just read it. Thank you!

Thanks for listing your favourites. I’ve only heard of a couple so I’ll add them to my watchlist ready for Christmas 2021.

Happy New Year to you and yours 🙂
