The top 20 films of Box Office Mojo’s ‘2011 worldwide grosses‘ featured all the films I expected. Mr Potter and co are still reigning supreme with their nearest contender, Transformers: Dark of the Moon, some $200 million behind.
Kung Fu Panda 2 has done a lot better than I expected. While it does hold a very respectable 83% at Rotten Tomatoes, I hadn’t expected it to make so much. Then again, being a PG, plenty of children will have been dragging their parents to see it! The same can be said for Cars 2, Rio, The Smurfs and Rango, too.
As of Monday 12th September, the order and the film’s worldwide gross (in millions) was as follows:
- Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2 $1,321.1 (approx £835)
- Transformers: Dark of the Moon $1,115.8 (approx £706)
- Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides $1039.3 (approx £658)
- Kung Fu Panda 2 $656 (approx £415)
- Fast Five $609.8 (approx £386)
- The Hangover Part II $581.4 (approx £368)
- Cars 2 $574.4 (approx £263)
- Rio $483.9 (approx £306)
- The Smurfs $457.3 (approx £287)
- Thor $448.5 (approx £284)
- Rise of the Planet of the Apes $373.9 (approx £236)
- X-Men: First Class $352.5 (approx £223)
- Captain America: The First Avenger $348.5 (approx £220)
- Bridesmaids $283.3 (approx £179)
- Super 8 $253.2 (approx £160)
- Rango $242.6 (approx £153)
- The Green Hornet $227.8 (approx £144)
- Green Lantern $219.6 (approx £139)
- Just Go With It $214.9 (approx £136)
- Bad Teacher $209.2 (approx £132)
I must say I’m genuinely surprised to see so many “comic book” movies up in such high positions. However what really surprised me was both of the “Green” movies as general consensus for both was very poor! Some of the others will have done so well because of names and production companies, whether they were good or not ie. Kung Fu Panda and co. Even if they are good films in their own right!
I, too, am surprised to see both Green Lantern and Green Hornet on this list.
oh well, stranger things have happened.
They have been big money spinners! $227.8 million and $219.6 million is an awful lot of money…
I will have to attribute it to the 3D pricing of tickets…because those movies were horrific! haha
