Casting update: The Hobbit

There was a double whammy of information this weekend with two interesting casting updates from the set of The Hobbit.

With no big fanfare, just a note on his Facebook page, Peter Jackson gave us this snippet of information:

“One comment that came up from the recent video blog was the Bilbo voice at the end—many of you assumed it was Sir Ian Holm. Whilst Ian will be returning as the older Bilbo Baggins in The Hobbit, that recording was actually Martin Freeman’s voice, taken from a script read through we recorded when the cast first arrived. I have to admit, I wasn’t sure who it was when I first heard it, either.”

Two days later it was followed up by news that Rob Kazinsky, who was cast in the role of Fili, was having to leave The Hobbit and return home for personal reasons.

My thoughts go to Rob as I’m sure this wasn’t a decision taken lightly…

  1. It’s sad news indeed about Rob. The latest news is a replacement for Fili has been found along with someone to play the King of the Elves. So there’s a constant stream of updates, which is great to have! It was difficult to get news about LOTR while it was being filmed.

  2. Hi Jeff,

Yes, I’ve heard the news about Lee Pace and Dean O’Gorman too. I know of these actors but haven’t seen them in anything. What do you reckon – good casting?

It is great having these updates! Very generous of Peter to let us have these glimpses and keeps the momentum going!
