Today – 22nd January – is the 71st birthday of the owner of one of the best voices on Earth: John Hurt.
Courtesy of IMDb, John Vincent Hurt was born in Derbyshire and grew up in Derbyshire and Grimsby, Lincolnshire.
Since his movie debut in 1962, Hurt has starred in over 100 films. From critical success in David Lynch’s The Elephant Man and Alan Stone’s Midnight Express to parts in such blockbusters as the Harry Potter series and Alien, Hurt has had a very varied career.
For his portrayal of John Merrick in The Elephant Man, Hurt was nominated for Best Leading Actor at the 1980 Academy Awards. He is the owner of two BAFTA Film Awards, plus one BAFTA TV Award, and he also has a Golden Globe.
Known for his distinctive voice, he is currently the voice of the dragon in the BBC’s Merlin and has provided voice overs for many adverts.
He will next been seen in the upcoming films Immortals, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2 and Melancholia.
