Today – 30th August – is the 48th birthday of one of my favourite actors, Mark Strong. Born Marco Giuseppe Salussolia, he previously studied at Royal Holloway, London, before joining the Bristol Old Vic Theatre School.
Strong is well-known for both his TV and film roles. In the UK, he appeared in the Prime Suspect, Our Friends in the North and Sharpe’s Mission TV series. His film roles have ranged from an insane astronaut in 2007′s Sunshine to the head of the Jordanian General Intelligence Department in 2008′s Body of Lies.
His more recent roles include Frank D’Amico in Kick-Ass, Godfrey in Robin Hood and Khabarov in The Way Back. This year, he appeared as Guern in The Eagle, Sinestro in Green Lantern and Clive Cornell in The Guard.
Looking back, I first noticed Strong in 2007′s Stardust, where he starred as Prince Septimus. Stardust is one of my favourite films, as I explained here. Strong’s character is trying to track down the necklace won by Claire Danes’ character, Yvaine. If he recovers the necklace, he will be the new king of Stormhold. Strong, with his long, dark hair, put on a great performance as the villainous prince.
- He will next be seen in Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy, out in the UK on 16th September
